About this app

Slack organises workplace conversation into channels — persistent, searchable rooms per team, project, or topic — and in doing so pulled a generation of offices out of email threads. The Android app is a full client: messaging, huddles for quick audio and video, file sharing, and an enormous catalogue of integrations with the tools teams already use. Salesforce has owned Slack since 2021.

The most important thing to know before adopting it is what the free plan no longer keeps. Since a 2022 policy change, free workspaces can only see messages and files from the past 90 days; older history still exists on Slack's servers but stays hidden until someone pays. Equally worth knowing: on paid plans, workspace admins can gain access to message content, including some private conversations, depending on plan and settings. Slack is a workplace tool, and it behaves like one.

The hub for a distributed team

Remote and hybrid companies run on channel structure: announcements in one place, each project in its own room, decisions searchable later. The mobile app makes catching up between meetings practical, and notification controls decide whether that is a feature or a leash.

Quick calls without scheduling

Huddles turn any channel or direct message into an instant audio or video call with screen sharing. For the thirty-second question that would otherwise become a calendar invite, this has become one of Slack's most-used additions.

Communities and volunteer groups — with a caveat

Plenty of open-source projects, alumni networks, and hobby groups run free Slack workspaces. It works, but the 90-day history window erases institutional memory, which is why many such communities have migrated to Discord or forums instead.

Channels, threads, and search

Public channels keep knowledge discoverable, private ones limit the audience, and threads stop side conversations from burying the main discussion. Search spans messages and files, though on free plans it only reaches back 90 days.

Huddles and clips

Lightweight audio and video huddles start with one tap and support screen sharing; clips let you record a short video or voice message for people in other time zones to play back later. Both reduce meeting load in practice.

App integrations and workflows

Thousands of integrations pipe alerts from code repositories, ticketing systems, calendars, and monitoring tools into channels, and Workflow Builder automates routine forms and reminders without code. This ecosystem is much of why teams find Slack hard to leave.

Slack Connect for external partners

Paid workspaces can share channels with clients, vendors, or agencies, replacing sprawling email chains with a shared room while each side keeps its own workspace. Admin controls decide who may start such channels and with whom.

Privacy & Data Safety

Treat every word typed into a work Slack as visible to your employer. Messages are encrypted in transit and at rest but not end to end, and Slack provides export and compliance tools to workspace owners: on higher-tier plans that reach includes direct messages and private channels. This is standard for enterprise software, yet it surprises people constantly. Off-hand DMs about colleagues have ended up in HR files and even court records.

  • Admin visibility scales with plan: standard exports cover public channels, while Business+ and Enterprise tools, and legally driven requests, can reach DMs and private channels. Assume nothing at work is confidential.
  • On free plans, messages older than 90 days are hidden but not deleted — they persist on Slack's servers and reappear if the workspace upgrades, unless retention settings say otherwise.
  • Slack suffered a breach of its user database in 2015, and in 2019 reset passwords for accounts affected by it; in 2022 some of its private code repositories were stolen, without evidence of customer data exposure.
  • Your profile, status, and connected app permissions are workspace-visible; review which third-party apps a workspace runs, because integrations can read the channels they are added to.

Advantages

  • Channel model plus search genuinely reduces internal email
  • Huddles and clips replace a meaningful share of meetings
  • Unmatched integration ecosystem for engineering and ops teams
  • Polished, full-featured Android client with fine-grained notification controls

Updates

Slack ships Android updates on a steady weekly-or-so rhythm, usually bug fixes and incremental refinements rather than visible change. Larger shifts — interface redesigns, AI summaries, catch-up views — roll out in waves controlled server-side, so two colleagues on identical versions can see different apps. As a Salesforce property, Slack's roadmap increasingly features AI assistance and deeper ties to Salesforce products, most of it gated to paid tiers.

  • AI features for paid plans, including channel recaps, thread summaries, and improved search answers
  • Interface reorganisation around unified inbox-style views for DMs, activity, and later items
  • Ongoing huddles improvements and workflow automation expansion

Editor's Assessment

Our verdict

As workplace infrastructure, Slack still earns its dominance: channels, search, huddles, and integrations form a tool that teams measurably rely on, and the Android app is among the better enterprise mobile clients. The calculation differs for communities, where the 90-day window quietly deletes the past, and for anyone assuming chat is private — it is not, and was never designed to be. Adopt it for work, configure notifications ruthlessly, and keep personal conversations on a personal messenger.

What works

  • Channel model plus search genuinely reduces internal email
  • Huddles and clips replace a meaningful share of meetings
  • Unmatched integration ecosystem for engineering and ops teams
  • Polished, full-featured Android client with fine-grained notification controls

What to know

  • 90-day history limit makes the free plan a poor archive
  • Per-user pricing gets expensive quickly at company scale
  • Constant-availability culture and notification fatigue are real costs
  • No end-to-end encryption, and employer visibility into messages on paid tiers

FAQ

What does the free version of Slack actually include?

Unlimited members and channels, one-to-one huddles, ten app integrations, and access to only the most recent 90 days of messages and files. Older content is hidden rather than erased, so upgrading restores it. For a team that treats chat as disposable this works; for one that treats it as a record, it does not.

Can my boss read my Slack DMs?

Possibly. On Business+ and Enterprise plans, or via legal and compliance processes, workspace owners can export direct messages and private channels. On cheaper plans the bar is higher but not absolute. Slack's own documentation describes these tools openly; the safe assumption is that anything on a company workspace is employer-accessible.

Why did our old messages disappear on the free plan?

In 2022 Slack replaced its old 10,000-message cap with a time-based limit: free workspaces show only the last 90 days. Nothing was deleted — history beyond the window is retained on Slack's servers and becomes visible again if the workspace moves to any paid plan.
